The Handmaid’s Tale Season 4: What happened in the finale episode?
The finale episode of The Handmaid’s Tale Season 4, titled, The Wilderness, was released on June 16, 2021. The episode is directed by Liz Garbus and written by Bruce Miller. In the episode, the viewers get to see that, As the ICC judges are occupied, June’s testimony against Fred is recorded. She tells Emily that she is upset that Fred will be traveling to Geneva to receive immunity.
Fred visits June and expresses his regret for the suffering she endured when Hannah was taken from her. June is dissatisfied and makes a deal with Tuello to have Fred brought to justice. She sets up a meeting in a quiet restaurant with Commander Lawrence, who offers to free 22 Gileadan women who are fighting for freedom in exchange for Fred.
Tuello claims he will ask his employer for permission. After saying goodbye to Serena and getting ready to travel to Geneva, Fred is stopped by Tuello before he can board the plane. Tuello then trades him for the 22 women and takes him to Lawrence and Nick, who then give Fred to June in No Man’s Land.
Former handmaids June, Emily, and others pursue Fred through the woods before killing him and hanging him on a wall. Luke is shocked when June comes to her house with blood on her face. The mailman sorts Serena’s envelopes as she waits for Fred to video chat with her online as planned and opens one that contains Fred’s wedding band and ring finger.
