The Handmaid’s Tale is an American dystopian television series developed by Bruce Miller, based on Margaret Atwood’s 1985 novel of the same name. The novel is set in Gilead, a totalitarian state in what was once the United States. Gilead is run by a fundamentalist regime that views women as state property, and it is plagued by natural calamities and a low birth rate.

The few remaining fertile women are forced into sexual servitude in a desperate attempt to repopulate a shattered globe. Offred, one of these women, is desperate to escape the horrible world she lives in and locate her kidnapped daughter. Moreover, the series has gained great critical and popular praise, and it is presently one of Hulu’s top-rated television shows.
