Answering the fans’ prayers, Netflix finally renewed The Lincoln Lawyer for a third season. The latest part of its second season dropped on August 3rd, 2023, and the fans just couldn’t digest what happened in the end (if you have watched the latest part, you know what we mean). Mickey Haller’s Lincoln hollered on the streets of Los Angeles and swiped off the legal ethos of its feet with this soaring victory in the courtroom, proving his lover-turned-client Lisa Trammel not guilty of the murder of a hotshot businessman.
Ever since the second season of this Netflix legal drama hit its library on July 6, 2023, it became quite a sensation on its own. It has garnered exponential popularity for its procedural setting, intricately connected with mystery, exuding lighthearted summer vibes. This explains the increasing viewership figures and also the consistency of the show’s position in Netflix’s Top 10 for multiple weeks.
Now that we know that there will be a third season of The Lincoln Lawyer, there is so much to uncover and anticipate about it. So, here’s us doing that for you.
When did Netflix renew The Lincoln Lawyer for a third season?
Netflix renewed The Lincoln Lawyer for season 3 on August 30th, 2023. The third season will reportedly constitute 10 episodes and it will be based on the fifth book in the series called The Gods of Guilt. The rumblings of season three renewal were experienced way before the show got officially renewed.
Upon the renewal, Ted Humphrey and Dailyn Rodriguez said:
“The audience response to the show has been so gratifying and wonderful, and we are thrilled to have the opportunity to dive back into Michael Connelly’s universe and bring Mickey Haller and his world to the screen again.”
Not only them, but the Vice President of Scripted Series, Netflix, US and Canada Peter Friedlander said:
“We’re thrilled to bring back The Lincoln Lawyer for a third season. Ted Humphrey and Dailyn Rodriguez have taken us deeper into Mickey Haller’s world, building out characters and stories that have connected with our global audience, and we look forward to seeing what they have in store for everyone’s favorite lawyer. The show continues to top our global lists and it’s a testament to the work from a creative powerhouse team including Michael Connelly, David E. Kelley, Ross Fineman and our partners at A+E Studios.”
The rumblings of the third season were experienced way before the show was officially renewed. In conversation with NYTimes, showrunner Ted Humphrey confirmed that a writer’s room for the third season had been set up before the WGA strike took flight on May 1st, 2023.
When asked about the future of the show, Humphrey said:
“Right now it depends not only on how Season 2 does but also on the resolution of the strikes. We had to shut down our writers’ room for Season 3 when the Writers Guild contract expired. We’ve done Michael Connelly picket events where Michael and the staff from “The Lincoln Lawyer” and “Bosch” have picketed together. We’re out there because the issues are real and have to be resolved, and the only way that’s going to happen is by the companies sitting back down with us to make a fair deal. Hopefully, that happens soon, and once it does, we will be back to work on a third season.”
The WGA listing had already confirmed Humphrey’s statement as the title of the show appeared in their litany.
What can we expect to happen in The Lincoln Lawyer season 3?
Glory Days is dead. Maggie has moved out of LA. Lorna and Cisco have married. Izzy will no longer be the driver of Mickey; she has her own dance studio. So much is shifting in Mickey’s life. But one thing that grabs the attention of the viewers is the looming threat to his life that haunts him in the last episode of the second season, being the defense council that he is.
In the first part of the second season, fans were left flabbergasted by the ending of Haller being beaten up and held at gunpoint by a mob of strangers. It left the viewers concerned about his fate. With the opening of the second part, fans are relieved as Izzy finds him in due time and takes him to the ER, where he gets incessant flashbacks of his childhood, which reveals that Mickey’s reckless behavior stems from his childhood.
Using unthinkable tactics to get back at the ferocious, headstrong prosecutor-nemesis Andrea Freemann and fight one of his toughest legal battles only to dig out the not-so-innocent identity of his client, the second season, based on Michael Connelly’s The Fifth Witness adds more nuance to Mickey’s life that can only be peeled off and added to in the third season.
“Mickey Haller gets the text, “Call me ASAP – 187,” and the California penal code for murder immediately gets his attention. Murder cases have the highest stakes and the biggest paydays, and they always mean Haller has to be at the top of his game.
When Mickey learns that the victim was his former client, a prostitute he thought he had rescued and put on the straight and narrow path, he knows he is on the hook for this one. He soon finds out that she is back in LA and back in life. Far from saving her, Mickey may have been the one who put her in danger.
Haunted by the ghosts of his past, Mickey must work tirelessly and bring all his skill to bear on a case that could mean his ultimate redemption or proof of his ultimate guilt.”
