The Rookie Season 4 opened with a 0.3 rating in the 18-49 demo and 2.8 million viewers and has remained fairly steady in demo throughout the season. Per ABC, The Rookie Season 4 averages 10 million total viewers after 35 days of viewing across ABC’s linear and digital platforms, growing six times over its initial Live+Same Day rating among Adults 18-49 with a lift of +500% after 35 days of multiplatform viewing. So, it is not surprising at all that the network decided to continue the story for another season.
The Rookie Season 5 Plot
According to Deadline, Fillion noted that the upcoming season of the “mothership” series would see his rookie cop “elevated to another level of his job and starting at rock bottom again” — becoming the rookie once more, even as he rises in the ranks. He also shared that Nolan will be serving as a training officer to a “brand new” female rookie who makes “all the same mistakes” his character has. “[It’s] kind of brilliant, the way we take a look at life and say, what keeps you a rookie?” he said. “What in your life are you still a rookie at?”
Hawley said that there would be a “fun storyline” ahead pertaining to the pregnancy of Nyla Harper (Mekia Cox), who will continue to enjoy a Cagney & Lacey type dynamic with Angela Lopez (Alyssa Diaz), as she returns to full-time work as a detective. Also enjoying an exciting upcoming storyline coming up, per Hawley, is attorney Wesley Evers (Shawn Ashmore), who winds up “crossing over from the defense side” into the arena of policing “in a more solid way.”
A final plot tease from The Rookie on Hawley’s part had to do with the burgeoning romance between Lucy Chen (Melissa O’Neil) and Tim Bradford (Eric Winter). “Obviously, we left quite the cliffhanger last season with the kiss which we’ve been building up to,” said The Rookie’s creator. “There will definitely be some repercussions and fallout from that.”

Lisseth Chavez, a former Chicago P.D. officer, will don a badge once more in Season 5 of ABC’s The Rookie. On September 25, the Nathan Fillion-hosted series will resume. Chavez will make several appearances as a guest star. Chavez will take on the role of Celina, a rookie officer with a laid-back demeanor who scored highly in school and whose unusual approach to police work presents a special challenge for her mentor.

Moreover, within the LAPD, Officer Aaron Thorsen will take a more prominent role. Tru Valentino, who joined ABC’s The Rookie in the fourth season in a recurring role alongside Nathan Fillion, has been elevated to series regular for the forthcoming fifth season of the drama series. Officer Aaron Thorsen of Valentino is the station’s newest rookie. In Season 4, he showed up in 11 episodes.
