On September 28, Gaiman teased his fans on Twitter by tweeting it’s ‘nearly Time’ without divulging any necessary details as to what it’s time for.
The tweet was accompanied by a 15-second video that depicted a sand timer front and center, with sand flowing in the background.

Is Sandman renewed for a second season?
Despite The Sandman garnering critical acclaim and exponential viewership numbers, The Sandman hasn’t been renewed for a second season by Netflix as of yet. Ever since the premiere of The Sandman on August 5, 2022, the crew has teased a lot about the renewal of The Sandman season 2, including Gaiman himself. However, Netflix hasn’t officially said anything about it yet.
Previously, Gaiman had mentioned that even though The Sandman received a lot of viewership hours, it may not get the green flag for a second season. On August 2021,22, he wrote, “For Netflix to release the money to let us make another season we have to perform incredibly well… So yes, we’ve been the top show in the world for the last weeks. That still may not be enough.”
Be that as it may, Allan Heinberg, the show-runner of The Sandman, mentioned that they are just waiting for Netflix to signal a green flag to them since the next chapter of the series is “ready to go”. According to RadioTimes, “a separate series focusing on Jenna Coleman’s character Johanna Constantine could materialize at some point in the future.”
In addition to Neil Gaiman teasing tweeting the tease about The Sandman, the Amazon-owned Audible also joined the coterie. However, Audible’s announcement was certainly related to the third volume of its original audiobook series of The Sandman. The first one was released in 2020.

Why is Netflix not renewing The Sandman Season 2?
As mentioned previously, the executive producers of the show, Gaiman, Heiberg, and David S Goyer, are adamant about creating the second season of the show. In conversation with RadioTimes, Gaiman mentioned, ‘There are three of us, the showrunner Allan Heinberg, David Goyer and me, and we’ve just finished writing the first episode, and plotting and breaking down the first two seasons, so we’ll see what happens next.”
However, Netflix’s abstinence from renewing the show for a second season could be influenced by a variety of factors that are generally the decision-makers for renewing or canceling the show. Factors such as viewership hours, investments, and acquisition of the licensing rights.
Be that as it may, considering how popular The Sandman became among the viewers, a second season does seem a likely option. Not only that, but even after 30 years in the making of The Sandman, which focused on two out of 10 volumes of the source, a lot has been left to tell.
In conversation with NME, Heinberg said, “We’ve got as many seasons as they’ll let us have. If enough viewers show up, we can go for quite a long while. We want to do all of it, we want a spin-off ministeries. We’d love to make it for as long as they’ll have us.”
