The good news has finally arrived, as the network has officially renewed the show for a second season. The series was created by Justin Haythe and is based on the 2004 non-fiction book Catherine de Medici: Renaissance Queen of France by Leonie Frieda. Hence, it is no surprise that the series is being extended as it is very much appreciated by the audience and critics worldwide. The last season has an overall score rating of 100% on the review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes.

In addition to this, Kathryn Busby, President of Original Programming, Starz, stated, “The Serpent Queen is distinctly modern, darkly comedic, and completely unexpected.” Further adding, “Catherine De Medici’s story is the perfect complement to our female-forward slate, and Samantha Morton’s brilliant portrayal of this ruthless, charming and savvy queen anchors the whole production. We’re thrilled to unveil more of her incredible life and reign in season two, which promises to be even more provocative and sublime.”

The Serpent Queen Season 2 Speculated Release Date

The exact launch date has yet to be determined, as the series was recently renewed for another season. However, it has been speculated that the forthcoming season would most likely have a release window suggested to be around late 2023 or sometime in early 2024.

On the other hand, this is merely speculation, and the network will reveal all of this information in a few months. Until then, the fans should be patient and follow all the social media platforms for the series to be updated with the latest information.

We also suggest that, in the meantime, catch up with the prior season as all the prior episodes of The Serpent Queen Season 1, along with the upcoming season finale, which will be available exclusively on Starz, with a range of membership options. You may stream movies and TV shows at no additional cost with any of their services, depending on the package you choose.

The Serpent Queen Season 2 Plot

Kathryn Busby, the president of original programming at Starz, simply says in a statement that Season 2 will “unveil more of her incredible life and reign,” as per Variety,  adding that the next installment “promises to be even more provocative and sublime.” In addition to this, the new season is expected to continue the story from the first season. Hence, we can’t speculate the plotlines on how the first season will conclude this early on.

But it is expected to carry on the basic premise which is a contemporary spin on the life of Catherine de Medici, who, against all odds, became one of the most powerful and longest-serving rulers in French history. It begins when 14-year-old, orphaned Catherine marries the 16th-century French court. With her future uncertain, she must quickly learn who she can trust – both within her personal entourage of courtiers and the members of the royal court – while outmaneuvering anyone who underestimates her determination to survive at any cost.

The Serpent Queen Season 2 Cast and Crew

In addition to Morton reprising her role as the titular Queen of France, you can likely expect the key characters surrounding her to return, too – such as Rahima (Sennia Nanua) and Mary (Antonia Clarke). We seem to have moved beyond the bulk of young Catherine (Liv Hill)’s story, and the actor told Collider that Episode 3 is “obviously where [her] journey ends.” However, it definitely seems plausible that The Serpent Queen Season 2 could make room for flashbacks to young Catherine, especially to the 15-year period that’s skipped over in the time jump.

The series felicitates from writer and executive producer Justin Haythe. Francis Lawrence and Erwin Stoff executive produce. Kathryn Tyus-Adair, Senior Vice President of Original Programming, is the executive overseeing The Serpent Queen for Starz, and Courtney Mock is overseeing Lionsgate Television. The series is produced for Starz by Lionsgate Television and 3 Arts Entertainment.

The Serpent Queen Season 1: A Quick Recap

“The Serpent Queen,” tells the story of Catherine de Medici (Samantha Morton), who, against all odds, became one of the most powerful and longest-serving rulers in French history. Catherine’s tale unfolds through flashbacks as she defends her actions and imparts the lessons she’s learned to her new servant girl, Rahima (Sennia Nanua).

At 14, the young, orphaned Catherine (Liv Hill) marries into the 16th-century French court. Despite her commoner status, her uncle Pope Clement (Charles Dance), has negotiated a large dowry and a geopolitical alliance in return for the union, and with it comes the expectation of many heirs. However, on her wedding night, Catherine learns that her new husband is in love with Diane de Poitiers (Ludivine Sagnier), a beautiful lady-in-waiting twice his age.

With her future suddenly uncertain and with little hope of conceiving, Catherine must quickly learn who she can trust – both within her personal entourage of courtiers and the members of the royal court – while outmaneuvering anyone who underestimates her determination to survive at any cost.
