Seldom has Netflix renewed a limited series whose source is derived from an external piece of literature including a newspaper article, a novel, a short story or a true event. Lucky are the fans of the true-crime fiction for whom Ryan Murphy’s smash hit thriller series The Watcher was renewed for a second season owing to its exponential viewership figures.
Inspired by true events that were later written in a The Cut article by Reeves Wiedeman, The Watcher recapitulates the life of a normal family when they move into their dream home, only to realise that they are living their worst nightmare as they receive mysterious and intimidating letters from their “watcher.”
Starring Naomi Watts and Bobby Cannavale as Nora and Dean Brannock, The Watcher was originally meant to be a limited series, as previously mentioned. However, since the Ryan Murphy show broke the glass ceiling, Netflix had no other option than to renew it for another season.
So, if you are persistently perched on the edge of your seats waiting to hop back to 657 Boulevard in the month of Saint Valentines, we are here to shatter all those hopes (It’s brutal, I know!) because The Watcher Season 2 is not coming to Netflix in February 2023.
However, it’s not the time to be down in the dumps because we have compiled some of the exciting latest updates about The Watcher season 2. Continue reading to get a sneak peek of the show.
When was The Watcher officially renewed for a second season?
On November 7, 2022, that is just 20 days after season one premiered on Netflix, The Watcher was renewed for a second season by the streaming giant. The news was confirmed by the official Netflix Twitter handle, saying:
“Following the record-breaking success of DAHMER – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story, Ryan Murphy & Ian Brennan will create two more instalments that will focus on other monstrous figures who have impacted society. A second season of The Watcher has also been greenlit!”

Bela Bajaria, the Head of Global TV, Netflix also said, “Audiences can’t take their eyes off Monster and The Watcher. The creative team of Ryan Murphy and Ian Brennan on Monster along with Eric Newman on The Watcher are masterful storytellers who captivated audiences all over the world. The back-to-back force of these two series is due to Ryan’s distinct original voice which created cultural sensations and we are thrilled to continue telling stories in the Monster and Watcher universes.”
What to expect from The Watcher Season 2?
Despite the show being loosely based on the true events detailed in The Cut article, the case is still unresolved which provides a lot of space for the writers to structure the plot of the upcoming season. The second season might recapitulate the events that occurred following the series since a lot of issues have surfaced thereafter.
In October 2022, New York Magazine published via The Cut an update to the story, which attempted to tie all the loose ends of the story. In order to do so, they have gathered reports from a voluntary neighborhood-wide DNA swab and Broadduses’ quest for private forensic genealogy to unravel the mystery. The article also came up with a recent theory encircling a local retired teacher who allegedly spoke about delivering letters to a Westfield home, which is also briefly featured on the show.
Be that as it may, the second season will certainly pick up from where its predecessor left off, that is, the season finale episode, “Haunting”, showcasing Dean’s obsession with finding the perpetrator and Nora’s artwork sale. When Nora is hospitalized due to terminal cancer, Dean reveals his obsession with finding the culprit. However, the arrival of Theodora completely changes the tangent of the show as she falsely reveals herself to be The Watcher, only for the reason that Dean could be at peace.
Exhausted from these mysterious happenings, the couple sold their home and accepted an offer from an LLC. When Nora moves in, she discovers a Watcher letter in the dumbwaiter and finds her dog dead, along with a mysterious watcher prying on her. Nora soon sells the house and we find Dean going to therapy a few weeks later.
Who are the expected cast members in The Watcher season 2?
The Watcher season 2 is expected to feature the following cast members:
- Naomi Watts as Nora Brannock
- Bobby Cannavale as Dean Brannock

When can we expect The Watcher season 2 to arrive on Netflix?
Although The Watcher was renewed in just 20 days of season one’s release, Netflix has not confirmed an exact release date for the second season as of yet. However, we can speculate when we might be able to stream the second season of The Watcher on the streaming platform based on the given data.
As per IMDb reports, season one took six months for filming, followed by its release seven months later. According to Netflix Life, “Given that the series began as a limited series, season 2 has yet to be written so filming is highly unlikely to have begun.”
Once the filming is wrapped, we can expect at least six months of post-production. Based upon these presumptions, we don’t expect to stream The Watcher season 2 on Netflix before early 2024. Be that as it may, these are just our predictions, so you can take this information with a pinch of salt if you want.
