When the good news of The Witcher being renewed for a fourth season was announced, it did not come without its sad counterpart. Henry Cavill was announced to be leaving the show. He won’t be reprising his role as Geralt of Rivia in the future. His role will now be reprised by Hunger Games star Liam Hemsworth. Consequently, even though The Witcher has been renewed for a fourth season, fans are rooting for the third one to arrive on Netflix so that they can see their favorite actor on screen.

That being said, The Witcher Season 3 is confirmed to release in the summer of 2023. Since the fourth season will no longer feature Henry Cavill in the role of Geralt, the fans of the show, more so of the actor, are rooting for the third season. Here are all the release date updates you need to know about the show.

For those unversed, The Witcher is a Netflix Original fantasy drama created by Lauren Schmidt Hissrich. Based on the titular book series by Polish writer Andrzej Sapkowski, it is set on a fictional medieval landscape called the Continent. It follows the legend of Geralt of Rivia, Yennefer of Vengerberg, and Princess Ciri.

The Witcher Season 3 is all set to release on June 29, 2023, on Netflix.

Previously, in an interview with Collider, showrunner Lauren Hissrich hinted at the release month of the third season, saying that it would be released in approximately “eight-ish months.” This information corroborates Netflix’s announcement that the show would return in the summer during Geeked Week in 2022.

Hissrich also mentioned that she is planning to release all episodes of season 3 at the same time. However, she hasn’t discussed it much yet. The decision to split up the season into subsequent parts comes off as a trend following Stranger Things season 4, Firefly Lane season 2, and You season 4.

Hissrich stated that if there is a split, it will be only prudent to release the first five episodes of the season in volume one and the rest in the second volume.

According to Netflix Life:

“The first five all build up to the Thanedd coup, which occurs in the sixth episode of the season.”

Per the reports, season 3 is replete with interminable battles with basilisks, ghouls, kilmorahs, and leshies. Speaking to Tudum, Cavill talks about his final season on the series and calls it to be a “lion’s den.”

Commenting upon how entrapped Ciri (Freya Allan) is, he says, “Now, there is a real threat. It’s genuine; it’s no longer theoretical — it’s practical. And it’s very, very dangerous. They are walking into the lion’s den everywhere they go.”

Showrunner Lauren Schmidt Hissrich tells Tudum, “In so many ways, Season 3 is the culmination of what we’ve been building toward all along. We get to see everything on the Continent change, which is super exciting.”

Although no death and destruction were underscored in the first two seasons of The Witcher, season 3 will be a lot different. All the opposing factions are on the hunt for Ciri, who is now touted as the most powerful being on the Continent. However, at the same time, she is also a nervous teenage girl, Geralt’s Child of Surprise, an orphaned princess in close association with the White Wolf and Yennefer.

In conversation with Tudum, Batey tells, “War has been threatened for so long. Finally, we’re like, ‘Oh, god. It’s here.’ The epicness, the stakes for the Continent, in the macro sense, are huge. But the micro stakes are even bigger.”

As Emhyr var Emreis (Bart Edwards) knocks on the door of the protagonist heralding all the violence and destruction that he possibly can by building his empire, amidst the elves fighting for their freedom. Although everyone is coming after Ciri, Geralt manages to remain “nonchalant” about it.

Speaking to Tudum, Cavill talks about his character and his demeanour in the third season. He says, “Geralt has been very nonchalant about these threats of war and famine and the end times. He’s like, ‘Look. I’ve been there, done that. It’s not the end times. It’s just going to be another fight.’ ”

However, he does add that stakes will rise “because everyone is after Ciri. That changes his entire perspective on things.”

Commenting upon his diplomacy and neutral personality, Cavill explicates, “It’s still very much intact. Geralt has seen how politics work out. A lot of it’s incredibly selfish. No matter which side anyone’s on, they’re doing the thing for them. He’s like, ‘Why would I pick a side when the same thing’s going to happen?’”

Explaining the political machinations in the third season and how they would shape the plot of the season, Batey says, “[The political atmosphere] is so different and so tense [this season],” adding how it’s “fairly representative of what happens in the text.”

In an interview with TechRadar, Hissrich disclosed that the third season of The Witcher will be based on the book, The Time of Contempt, which is her “favourite book in the saga.” Here’s the official synopsis of the third season:

“As monarchs, mages, and beasts of the Continent compete to capture her, Geralt takes Ciri of Cintra into hiding, determined to protect his newly-reunited family against those who threaten to destroy it.

“Entrusted with Ciri’s magical training, Yennefer leads them to the protected fortress of Aretuza, where she hopes to discover more about the girl’s untapped powers; instead, they discover they’ve landed in a battlefield of political corruption, dark magic, and treachery. They must fight back, put everything on the line — or risk losing each other forever.”

The book predominantly captures the relationship between Sigismund Dijkstra (Graham McTavish) and Philippa Eilhart (Cassie Clare), the Redanian spymaster who was provided with a brief appearance in the season 2 finale.

“The chemistry between them, the dynamic, the constant shifting machinations of the political movements are fascinating,” Batey says. “I can’t take my eyes off of Cassie and the vulnerability and the power that she wields.”

Amidst the bloody battles and unfair political coups, the core theme of Season 3 as Hissrich mentions is family. “What I think is fun about this season is you get Geralt, Ciri and Yen — they’re linked by destiny. We’ve said that from the very beginning,” Schmidt Hissrich says. “Yet clearly by this point they want to be together. And so that’s more than destiny. Suddenly that’s a choice.”

The showrunner also teased the arrival of another malevolent entity haunting the Continent, apart from Emhyr. Schmidt Hissrich said, “Our villain has been playing a very long game. Decades.” Tudum reports that the Witcher team has been planning toward this “big reveal” since day one. The showrunner also clarifies that certain prior scenes and decisions which seemed nebulous and “out of character” at the moment will finally start to make sense in the third season.

The third season will also feature Ciri entering the family business and fighting along with her father. Allan says, “The thing that makes her happy is fighting with Geralt and getting to be a witcher — even though she’s not technically a witcher, she likes to pretend she’s a witcher.”

This will only make Geralt more of a family man and a proud dad. He says, “You’ll see Geralt is correcting her errors. When she exposes herself, he will protect her, but otherwise, he’s letting her do the fight.” In season 3, you will be seeing another side of Geralt: Geralt as the family man, hiding behind a walled-up, cold, and acerbic nature. Batey says, “By the time we get to Season 3, it’s Geralt going, ‘Oh, this is why I was put on this earth.”

Season 3 will also underscore Yennefer as the mother who mourned her inability to bear children in Season 1. Chalotra says, “She’s struck by this newfound family. She always wanted to become a mother…Yennefer and Ciri are altogether something new. These feelings towards her are deep and strong and come as a surprise. She went into this relationship for herself and in it found a purpose beyond anything she’s set her heart on before. She cares deeply about something bigger than herself for the first time.”

This new outlook would consequently be politically enlightening for Yennefer. “The Continent isn’t safe for anyone, least of all Ciri. Without nurturing Ciri’s chaos and helping her understand something Yen has learnt the hard way, Ciri will not survive what’s coming for her,” Chalotra says. “Yennefer puts Ciri first and in doing so, she’s able to persuade people she once hated, or charm anyone who gets in the way of protecting Ciri. Compromise is a keyword, actually. She learns how to do that this season.”

Season 3 will also explore Uncle Jaskier’s romantic side, who, until now, is also only seen talking about his conquests and not doing anything. Hissrich teases, “Jaskier falls in love. And it’s with a character who fans will know [and] continues showing up in the books. So what happens this season between them will have ripple effects for a very long time.”

Batey jokes, “He’s having his hot girl summer,” and adds, “It’s been really rewarding to see [his love life] told in a very visual way. [We] ensured that these romances are told truthfully — and sensitively and carefully, without resorting to stereotypes… Hopefully, we’ve created something that is special, a sapioromantic and sapiosexual [connection] that is as flawed as any other relationship in this show.”

We expect the following cast members to reprise their respective roles in The Witcher Season 3:

  • Henry Cavill as Geralt of Rivia
  • Freya Allan as Cirilla
  • Anya Chalotra as Yennefer of Vengerberg
  • Joey Batey as Jaskier
  • Royce Pierreson as Istredd
  • Anna Shaffer as Triss Merigold
  • Kim Bodnia as Vesemir

Expressing his feelings about the departure, Henry Cavill said, “My journey as Geralt of Rivia has been filled with both monsters and adventures, and alas, I will be laying down my medallion and my swords for Season 4.”

He further added, “In my stead, the fantastic Mr Liam Hemsworth will be taking up the mantle of the White Wolf. As with the greatest of literary characters, I pass the torch with reverence for the time spent embodying Geralt and enthusiasm to see Liam’s take on this most fascinating and nuanced of men. Liam, good sir, this character has such a wonderful depth to him, enjoy diving in and seeing what you can find.”
