The Witcher Season 3 seems to be hanging us by a thin thread called hope. The last season of The Witcher franchise, i.e. Season 2, graced us in December 2021. As we wait for the latest season to arrive, we are sure of one thing. The Witcher Season 3 is not coming in June, or to be more specific, anytime sooner on Netflix. Sad, but that’s the truth.

For the uninitiated, The Witcher is a Polish American drama series that is also a screen adaptation of the book series by the same name and written by the Polish author Andrzej Sapkowski. The story is located in a fantasy medieval world– a landmass known as ‘The Continent’.

It revolves around the adventure of Geralt of Rivia and Princess Ciri, who are bound by fate. Netflix has brought to us two of its seasons– The Witcher Season 1 containing eight episodes, aired in December 2019, was based on The Last Wish and Sword of Destiny, and The Witcher Season 2, also consisting of eight episodes released in December 2021. During this time Netflix renewed the show for a third season.

Now that we are waiting for The Witcher Season 3, here are some speculations about when and what to expect.

The Witcher Season 3 Release Date

At least we know that we are getting Season 3. But unfortunately, we cannot give you an official date. We know that Blood Origin is already scheduled for a 2022 release. Most probably, The Witcher Season 3 might be looking towards a 2023 release. As per reports, the filming is underway and post-production might require another few months— this is pushing the date to early next year. Till then have faith and hold on to your breath.

The Witcher Season 3 Trailer

As mentioned earlier, the possibility of a trailer is very faint in near future. We have seen during previous seasons, that a trailer would drop four to six months prior to its release. Therefore, to be accurate in assumptions, one must have a confirmation on the release date, and likewise, watch out for the trailer. If we get any further detail, we shall be sharing in this very space.

The Witcher Season 3: What can we expect?

Netflix’s official synopsis for the series suggests, “As monarchs, mages, and beasts of the Continent compete to capture her, Geralt takes Ciri of Cintra into hiding, determined to protect his newly reunited family against those who threaten to destroy it. Entrusted with Ciri’s magical training, Yennefer leads them to the protected fortress of Aretuza, where she hopes to discover more about the girl’s untapped powers; instead, they discover they’ve landed in a battlefield of political corruption, dark magic, and treachery. They must fight back, put everything on the line – or risk losing each other forever.’

Season 3 will be picking up exactly where it left off in Season 2. Ciri, who is now under the protection of Geralt and Yenefer, is the prey of various warring factions. This new season might have these opponent parties fighting it out. According to Lauren Schmidt Hissrich’s tweet, Season 3 might be adapting Andrzej Saprowski’s The Time of Contempt.

One more question that often arises is whether The Witcher Season 3 will have multiple timelines. In an interview with The Wrap, Hissrich has said that structure is a very important aspect to them.

She added, “In season 2, there wasn’t a reason to do non-linear storylines. So we took a very linear approach, which allowed us to play with some different aspects of visions or flashbacks, for instance, that we wouldn’t be able to do if we were doing timelines. Season 3 I think is really great. It’s based on The Time of Contempt, and that actually to me is a very easily adaptable book. There’s tons of action, there are tons of things that are just jaw-dropping when you get to them. So we’re really letting that lead our storytelling. Season 3, for instance, takes place on a very, very small timeline. Not a lot of time passes because it doesn’t need to.”

During Netflix’s Unlocked Show, Henry Cavill shared an insight, saying “Tthere is a chance to explore the Nenneke relationship a little further. Of course, I would love to work with the Witchers some more… but it’s about making sure that story happens without too much in the way of diversions [from the books].”
