When the second volume of The Witcher season 3 was released on July 27th, 2023, the fans relished every moment of Henry Cavill in his role as Geralt of Rivia. Replete with uncountable battles with the basilisks, ghouls, kilmorahs, and leshies, the third season was true, as Cavill put it, a “lion’s den.” Featuring intricate characters tied in with impassioned storylines, the third season has set the stage for the fourth one, and the fans just can’t wait for it now.

For those unversed, The Witcher is a Netflix Original fantasy drama created by Lauren Schmidt Hissrich and originally debuted on December 2019. Based on the titular book series by Polish writer Andrzej Sapkowski, it is set on a fictional medieval landscape called the Continent. It follows the legend of Geralt of Rivia, Yennefer of Vengerberg, and Princess Ciri.

Bidding adieu to Henry Cavill in season three, the fans would now have to get used to Hunger Games star Liam Hemsworth in the role of Geralt of Rivia. Touted as the ideal binge-watch show on Netflix, the show’s exponential fan base has earned it three seasons. We can only wait so much to know what happens in the fourth season of the most popular and talked about shows on Netflix.

Here’s a complete rundown of the same.

When can we expect The Witcher season 4 to arrive on Netflix?

At the time of writing this article, The Witcher season 4 does not have an official release date. However, that’s not surprising, given that its immediate predecessor was released relatively recently. Consequently, we don’t expect the fourth season to be done with its production. Be that as it might, if we take an educated guess, we can expect the show’s fourth run in late 2024.

At the same time, it is important to discuss the show’s production status since it has become a matter of concern owing to the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes which have postponed the production schedules of broadcast and OTT entertainment indefinitely. Until a fair deal is negotiated between the concerned parties, the stasis will continue, and the production will continue to be on hold, including that of The Witcher season 4. Consequently, the release date might even be pushed further up to 2025.

Who are the expected cast members of The Witcher season 4?

Owing to the paucity of information on the cast list for the fourth season, it is difficult to presume who exactly will return. Be that as it might, we expect the following faces to pop up on our screens:

  • Liam Hemsworth as Geralt of Rivia
  • Anya Chalotra as Yennefer of Vengerberg
  • Freya Allan as Ciri
  • Joey Batey as Jaskier
  • Bart Edwards as Emhyr van Emreis

In the wake of the major change in the face of the show, producer Tomek Baginski said:

“Not going deeply into those ideas because this will be a huge spoiler, [but] it’s also very, very close to the meta ideas which are deeply embedded in the books, especially in book five. It’s very lore accurate. It’s very close to what was set out in the books and I think this change will be quite flawless.”

What can we expect to happen in The Witcher season 4?

In season 3, as the showrunner Lauren Schmidt rightly pointed out, the fans observe the “culmination of what we’ve been building toward all along. We get to see everything on the Continent change, which is super exciting.”

Starkly different from the first two seasons, the third season underscores death and destruction with all the opposing factions on the hunt for Ciri, who was now touted as the most powerful being on the Continent. However, at the same time, she was also a nervous teenage girl, Geralt’s Child of Surprise, an orphaned princess in close association with the White Wolf and Yennefer.

Assuming that season 4 picks up from where its immediate predecessor left off, we expect it to raise the stakes even higher, considering that it has enough material and resources to get inspired from.

Speaking of material and resources, it is important to point out that a lot of fans did not hesitate to criticize the show’s digression from the books, which apparently irked them since, as they suggested, the narrative direction became much weaker and more straightforward.

The one good thing which might accelerate the production process, given the strikes cease to continue, is the already written scripts for season 4. However, the fans would want to see a more contextual representation of the original narrative that is inclined toward the books.

Season 4 is also expected to answer some of the burning questions that were left hanging like cobwebs in the minds of the fans especially related to Geralt’s romance with Yennefer.

Although the faces have changed, the story still remains the same. Exciting, spine-chilling, and thrilling!

Will The Witcher season 4 seal the fate of the show?

Attaining the reputation of being one of Netflix’s finest, the creators of the show wouldn’t risk sealing the fate of the show just like that. In May 2023, the show was officially renewed for a fifth season. While announcing the renewal, the show’s casting director Sophie Holland also stated that the fifth season will be filmed back-to-back with season 4 to Deadline

“We’re just about to start filming on season four with Liam Hemsworth and there will be a short gap then we go straight into season five,” Holland said.
