Based upon Henry Fielding’s titular four-part novel, Masterpiece’s latest romantic period drama on PBS has gained quite a reputation with its emotional ending that digresses from the novel. The latest incarnation gives a new twist to the tale of the eponymous hero who falls in love with a wealthy heiress.
Sophia (Sophie Wilde) is protected by a triumvirate of vigilant aunts, Aunt Western (Shirley Henderson), Aunt Harriet (Tamzin Merchant) and Lady Bellaston (Hannah Waddingham), including a worldly-wise servant, Honour (Pearl Mackie).
Banished by his adoptive father, Tom (Solly McLeod) leaves for London, where Sophia is also headed to escape a forced marriage to William and seek the protection of her aunts. With its compelling characters and an intricate plotline that threads to discover the real parentage of Tom, this latest novel adaptation has left the viewers with watery eyes and butterflies swarming in their stomachs.
The executive producer, Susanne Simpson said, “This new adaptation of Tom Jones is a big-hearted rom-com that will absolutely delight our viewers. It’s fun–full of laughter and romance. I’m extremely proud to partner with producers Mammoth Screen, writer Gwyneth Hughes, and an outstanding cast on this joyful show.”
Although the ending digresses from the original plotline of the novel, it leaves the viewers with a slew of questions including: Who is Tom’s real mother? Was Mrs Waters (Susannah Fielding) covertly Jenny Jones all the time? These questions lead one to ask a big burning question: will there be Tom Jones season 2?
Here’s what we know so far about the same.
Has PBS renewed Tom Jones for a second season?

At the time of writing this article, the British drama is not renewed for a second season. In fact, we believe that season one seals the fate. A co-production with Masterpiece and ITV, Tom Jones was meant to have a beginning, middle, and end. Created as a limited series, we don’t expect the drama to venture outside its source material, which has been more or less covered in the first season. Be that as it may, since PBS has not canceled the show, we still look forward to the tiny ray of light ahead.
What can we expect to happen in Tom Jones season 2?

Henry Fielding’s Tom Jones is touted to be one of the most critically acclaimed of the British Restoration era, threading some of the most intriguing labyrinthine plot arcs that eventually untie themselves. The latest Masterpiece adaptation of the same, although taking some creative license to wrap the story up, has made several digressions from the source material. For instance, showrunner and writer Gwyneth Hughes doesn’t kill Tom’s mother before he meets her. She allows the mother-son duo to have an emotional confrontation leaving the viewers teary-eyed.
Be that as it may, it still leaves the viewers with a slew of unanswered questions. How did Bilfil (James Wilbraham) and Lady Bellaston (Hannah Waddingham) join hands to fool Tom? Who is Tom Jones’ father?
Regarding Bilfil seeking solace from Lady Bellaston, Tom Jones EP James Gandhi, in conversation with Decider, said, “That was Gwyn’s invention, entirely, when the door opens and Blifil walks into hell, basically, with Lady Bellaston.”
He further added, “I mean, I would love to see what happens after that door was shut, but I don’t know. It’s hard, isn’t it? Because it’s happy ever after. Do we want to know what happens after they walk into the sunset? I think I feel quite happy with knowing that Tom and Sophia are very happy together.”
Additionally, Hughes said, “Oh, well, we never discussed [a Season 2],” Hughes said. “I know that sounds really weird. But because it’s a big classic work. Yeah, I don’t know. What would you do? God, you put an idea in my mind now.”
It seems that the idea of Tom Jones season 2 is fading away slowly. Even the slightest possibility of it turning into a reality evaporated when Hughes discussed an already lined-up project with Gandhi and Mammoth Screen. Not a period drama, that’s for sure.
Gandhi could not abstain from saying, “Actually, it’s contemporary. It’s completely different. I mean, it’s so different but it is very early. We hope it will happen. But who knows?”
