True Lies Plot

The True Lies series, like its inspiration, the 1994 classic movie released back in 1994 starring Arnold Schwarzenegger and Jamie Lee Curtis as a married couple in need of marital rejuvenation, will center on its central couple. In the film, Schwarzenegger played Harry Tasker, whose family thought he was a boring computer salesman but who was actually an American spy. Jamie Lee Curtis played Harry’s wife, Helen.

According to CBS, the series logline states, “A breakneck adaptation of Oscar-winner James Cameron’s big-screen classic, CBS’s True Lies is the saga of an unremarkable suburban homemaker who discovers her unremarkable computer-consultant husband leads a remarkable double life as an international spy. The reveal of this shocking secret puts Helen, Harry, and their kids in grave jeopardy, forcing Helen to work alongside Harry on his missions. The anything-but-unremarkable adventure that ensues shakes up the Tasker’s marriage as it shakes up the international world of espionage.”

As stated by Deadline, Bringing True Lies to television has been a longtime passion for McG. He started pursuing the idea in 2016, shortly after he signed an overall deal with 20th TV, whose sister feature studio produced the movie. The following year, a TV series reboot with Marc Guggenheim as a writer sold to Fox with a put pilot commitment. It did not go beyond the script stage but McG continued his efforts. In a 2019 interview, he indicated that a True Lies TV series could still happen, possibly at Disney+. Last year, McG was tapped as director and executive producer of 20th TV’s series reboot of another popular movie, Turner & Hooch, for Disney+, created and executive produced by Nix. The two hit it off and partnered on True Lies. Their pitch landed at CBS last fall.
