Writer-director Gunnar Vikene’s three-part Norwegian Netflix limited series War Sailor brings you the story of stuck pretty badly working-class sailors who are caught up in the turmoil of World War ll.
Mainly revolving around the kinship between two sailors Alfred and Sigbjørn, stranded aboard a merchant vessel in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, and how that dynamic works out prior to this, during, and after the dispute, this is a compassionate but diversely paced and well-constructed drama that amalgamates wartime horrors with a more accurately humankind.
It’s a pretty production, at least. The elements are treated well by equivalent capable actors who mostly play ordinary folks trapped in uncanny circumstances, forced to experience – or at least visibly enact – a multitude of harsh emotions. The hook is there. The ultimate goal is in sight. There’s just no eagerness to join the two. Here’s everything we know about season 2 of War Sailor.
War Sailor season 2 renewed or canceled?
Well, War Sailor was introduced by Netflix as a limited series, meaning it was only meant to have three episodes.
It makes sense as the story has already been told, by the same person, in a feature film. The events shown in the series make up a total narrative arc and, while there was some ambivalence at the ending of season 1 of War Sailor, it was an intentional, tasteful ambivalence that would actually be maltreated by more inspection of these characters.
With all this being said, it seems highly unlikely that War Sailor will come back for a second season, even if it turns out to be extremely liked by fans, which in this case might be.
Anyway, there may still be some attraction to the concept. The notion of people from daily walks of life being caught up in worldly conflict is desirable, and there are just so many stories out there that could be told. Vikene could also follow the same outline and maritime focus by following other sailors and their outlooks during the war, but this would probably seem like wringing a good idea for all its worth.
As far as we can tell, War Sailor will not be renewed for a second season.
What is War Sailor about?
Alfred and Sigbjørn are two close friends, who work on a cargo vessel in the Atlantic Ocean when World War ll happens to break out. The dire circumstances pushed everyone on the ship to the edge of becoming civilian fighters on the front lines of the war, fighting against the Germans – who at any time might attack from their submarines. While the men fight, Alfred’s wife, Cecelia, and their three children strife to survive in the conquered Norway. As bombs drop, Alfred and Sigbjørn wonder if their homes will still be there if or when they return.
