Get ready to mark your calendars, because a thrilling new chapter is about to unfold!
The iconic Adams family is expanding its spooky, dark, and mysterious world as the exciting news has finally been revealed after months of building anticipation of whether it will turn out to be true. Now the fans can be relieved as Netflix has officially greenlit a spinoff series of the beloved supernatural comedy horror streaming series ‘Wednesday’ which revolves around Wednesday Addams, who attempts to solve a murder mystery at her new school. The first season was based on the character popularized through various adaptations by Charles Addams.
This upcoming Wednesday-inspired series will revolve around Fred Armisen’s Uncle Fester character, as seen in the first season. This project promises to captivate audiences with its enchanting blend of macabre humor and captivating storytelling. With Netflix at the helm, we can only imagine the wickedly delightful surprises that await us, as new reports have hinted that the streaming giant was looking to build a franchise around its reigning most popular series, as it became the second-most watched English-language Netflix series with 252.1 million views within three weeks of release.
In addition, Deadline has also confirmed that the series has been in early development at the streamer from MGM Television for a while, as conversations about the offshoot are happening alongside preparations for Wednesday Season 2. Created by Alfred Gough and Miles Millar, the phenomenon series is a new take on The Addams Family starring Jenna Ortega as Wednesday Addams, which is eyeing to begin filming for its upcoming season (renewed back in January 2023) in Ireland, with new details emerging that the start of production is tentatively slated for late April 2024.
Fred Armisen, as Uncle Fester, guest starred in episode seven of Wednesday Season 1.
Coming under the Addams Family tree, he is Wednesday’s paternal uncle and possesses the ability to generate static electricity, which he uses to revive Thing (a sentient disembodied hand who is sent by Wednesday’s parents to watch over her at Nevermore Academy). In the episode, the character is introduced as a lurking figure at Mayor Walker’s funeral, which Wednesday notices and starts chasing into the forest. Only to later reveal that the figure is Uncle Fester, who explains to Wednesday that the monster she has been investigating is a Hyde.
Later, they retrieve a diary from the hidden library together, which reveals that Hyde must always have a master.
On the other hand, little to no information about the theme of this new spin-off has been revealed. The same goes for the plot of Wednesday Season 2 which has been kept under wraps. But on the bright side, in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Gough and Millar stated that the second season would expand upon the friendship between Wednesday and Enid while also evolving Wednesday’s relationship with her mother, Morticia. Ortega also stated that the season would “lean into the horror aspect” while “ditching any romantic love interest for Wednesday.”
Preparations for a second season, with Ortega now also serving as producer, commenced in December 2022, following Amazon’s acquisition of Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. At last, though there is no cast confirmation yet, reports have hinted that the studio has extended the options for the main Season 1 actor while scripts are being written. During Tudum: A Global Fan Event, Ortega even said that a new Addams family member is on his way to Wednesday, hinting that it might be Cousin Itt who will shuffle his way into Nevermore.
