Based on the 2012 novel titled A Man Called Ove by Frederik Bachman, which was also previously adapted into a film in 2015, A Man Called Otto is the 2023 movie produced by Sony, featuring Tom Hanks. Released in theatres in mid-January 2023, the viewers and fans of the book are wondering when will the Tom Hanks-starrer hit the Netflix library.
Directed by Marc Forster and written by David Magee, here’s the official synopsis of A Man Called Otto as per Sony Pictures:
“A Man Called Otto tells the story of Otto Anderson, a grump who no longer sees purpose in his life following the loss of his wife. Otto is ready to end it all, but his plans are interrupted when a lively young family moves in next door, and he meets his match in quick-witted Marisol.”
Alongside Tom Hanks, the movie also includes Mariana Trevino, Rachel Keller and Manuel Garcia-Rulfo.
When can we expect A Man Called Otto to arrive on Netflix US?
Owing to the first window deal Netflix shares with Sony Pictures concerning the theatrical slate from 2021 onwards, the movie is expected to arrive on Netflix in the United States and India, like other movies including The Woman King, Devotion, Lyle, Crocodile, and I Wanna Dance With Somebody. However, according to What’s on Netflix:
“The nature of this agreement isn’t perfect given we’ve seen movies land on Netflix anywhere between 120 days and 165 days following their initial theatrical release.”
Taking this into consideration, A Man Called Otto is expected to arrive on Netflix sometime between May 13th and June 2023.
When can we expect Man Called Otto to arrive on Netflix internationally?
Unlike the United States and India, Netflix does not have the first window deal when it comes to a majority of other regions. As per the deal, Netflix India will receive Sony movies 120 days after their theatrical release.
When it comes to Netflix Canada and the United Kingdom, both regions receive Sony movies almost two years after their theatrical release. This deal is also applicable to other regions like Belgium, Poland, Spain, Japan, Greece, Sweden, and South Africa.
As per that schedule, A Man Called Otto will drop on Netflix in these regions sometime in 2024/2025.

As previously mentioned, A Man Called Otto is based on Frederik Bachman’s A Man Called Ove, which was originally written in Swedish. Here’s the official synopsis of the novel (courtesy of Amazon)
“…Ove is almost certainly the grumpiest man you will ever meet. He thinks of himself surrounded by idiots – neighbors who can’t reverse a trailer properly, joggers, shop assistants who talk in code, and the perpetrators of the vicious coup d’etat that ousted him as Chairman of the Residents’ Association. He will persist in making his daily inspection rounds of the local streets. But isn’t it rare, these days, to find such old-fashioned clarity of belief and deed? Such unswerving conviction about what the world should be, and a lifelong dedication to making it just so? In the end, you will see, there is something about Ove that is quite irresistible…”
