Are Moana and Maui readying their sails for another adventure?
After the sequel of the 2016 film navigated its way into the hearts of the audience, fans were left wondering if Moana 3 is already in the works.
Moana 2 saw the Polynesian native Moana and Demigod Maui embarking on a dangerous deep ocean voyage to resurface the cursed island Motufetū from the evil clutches of storm god Nalo. Initially, they are stopped by Matangi, a mystical creature, who under Nalo’s control is tasked with hindering anyone from reaching Motufetū, but eventually helps Moana retrieve the island in hopes of her being free from Nalo.
Even though the duo successfully reunited their people, the post-credit scene showed a new problem brewing on the horizon.
Moana 2 mid-scene credits set the tone for a third movie
Instead of a post-credit scene, the movie contains a mid-credit scene that sets the tone for another possible movie. The scene shows Matangi speaking to Nalo, who promises to bring down Moana and Maui after their successful attempt at reuniting the people of the ocean.
Joining them is Tamatoa the Crab from the first movie, who is still furious with the duo for outsmarting him and wants to take them down for good.
If a Moana 3 is in the books, it can be about these three entities forming a villainous alliance to try and bring down Moana and Maui. Nalo might be in focus as he continues his attempts to butcher Moana’s attempts to keep in touch with her spiritual ancestors who are a strong guide for her. With Tamatoa and Matangi at his flanks, the trio might stir up some serious trouble, beckoning Moana and Maui to take to the waters again on another adventure.
Will there be a Moana 3?
While Disney has not confirmed Moana 3, this post-credit scene seemed to signal that a threequel might be in the works. Moreover, the franchise is expanding its horizons with Disney currently filming a live-action version of the first Moana movie, starring Dwayne Johnson, which will be released in theatres in 2026.
Moana 2 reached the US theatres on Wednesday, November 27, 2024, and on Friday, November 29 in the UK cinemas. However, if you are wondering how you can watch the film on Disney+, you will have to wait a while.
Disney has not yet confirmed when it will be releasing Moana 2, but we can make an educated guess considering previous trends. After a Disney movie is released in theatres, it usually takes 100 days before it makes its streaming debut. If Moana 2 follows the same trajectory, we can expect the film to arrive on our Disney + apps by March 2025.

The sequel has claimed a high-grossing rank on the box office seat and has already managed to ramp up $57.5 million on its first day of release from 4,200 locations, according to Variety.
Furthermore, it has been predicted by the outlet that the movie might set a new Thanksgiving record and collect at least $175 million in its first five days, surpassing Frozen 2’s initial box office collection, which was $125 million.
