Ever since Yellowjackets season 2 wrapped on May 28, 2023, the melancholic gloom continues to haunt the hearts of the ardent viewers of the show by showcasing the death of one of the most prominent characters. Breaking all the conventions, the season two finale aired over the Memorial Day weekend, showcasing the strength in unity and acceptance of oneself.
Renewed for the third season three months before the second season even premiered, Showtime’s Yellowjackets has expanded its popularity and cult-like fan base to another level with its riveting plotlines and intriguing character sketches.
Untying the mystery of Javi, Jackie, and Shauna’s corpses, the second season confounded the minds of the viewers with its flabbergasting ending. But what occupies the brain space of fans even more is: how long do we have to wait before we realize what happened next?
Here’s what we know so far about the same.
Yellowjackets season 3: Is there any hope for September?
It’s with a heavy heart that we have to confirm that Yellowjackets season 3 is not premiering on Showtime this September. In fact, we presume that the third season might not premiere this year at all, owing to the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes.
As of now, like the production schedules of high-grossing shows like Stranger Things, Outer Banks, and The Sandman season 2, the production schedule of Yellowjackets season 3 is also put on hold. It was scheduled to begin this May, but it did not kickstart owing to the writers’ strike which began in the same month.
Co-creator Ashley Lyle confirmed the news in May by sharing a tweet. Lyly wrote:
Well, we had exactly one day in the #YellowJackets S3 writers’ room. It was amazing, creatively invigorating, and so much fun, and I’m very excited to get back to it as soon as the #WGA gets a fair deal. #1u #unionstrong”
Owing to such delays in the production schedule, we don’t expect the latest installment to premiere before late 2024. Considering that the writers’ strike is still ongoing, a 2024 release date also seems a bit far-fetched.
Be that as it may, we don’t expect the anticipation to get frustrating for the fans given that the bonus episode will release soon. The announcement of a bonus episode came as a result of the ruckus created on the internet regarding Yellowjackets season 2 having only nine episodes.
This bonus episode was rumored to air on June 2, however, that proved to be mendacious. Replying to a fan on Twitter, Lyle wrote:
“There will be a bonus episode between seasons, but I love you guys and I don’t want y’all to lose sleep thinking it’s tonight.”
The co-creator later replied to another fan saying that they couldn’t reveal the exact release date as of yet, but tweeted that it will come out “closer to S3” and later added, “I’m not being coy, there’s a strike and things are complicated!”
