BLACKPINK’s Ice Cream (with Selena Gomez) hits 700 Million views on YouTube!

According to BLACPINK’s agency, YG Entertainment, Ice Cream hit 700 Million views on YouTube on February 13, 2022. Moreover, at the time of its release, the song peaked at number 13 on Billboard’s main single list, the highest among Korean female singers, and remained on the chart for eight weeks.

Ice Cream is a fun and refreshing song to listen to with its bubblegum dance-pop track and flirtatious lyrics. The music video for the song was officially released on August 28, 2020. It was a very different concept for the group as compared to the kind of music videos fans have witnessed so far.

BLACKPINK is a four-membered girl group under YG Entertainment, consisting of Jisoo, Jennie, Rosé, and Lisa. The group made its debut in August 2016 with the single album, Square One which consisted of two songs – Whistle and Boombayah. They marked their presence in the industry right at debut and were termed as Monster Rookies, with Whistle becoming their first number one entry on South Korea’s Gaon Digital Chart and Boombayah on the Billboard World Digital Songs Sale chart.

BLACKPINK made a comeback in November with their second album – Square Two. It consisted of the tracks Playing with Fire and Stay. The group once again hit number one at the Billboard World Digital Songs Sale chart, with Playing With Fire, and became the first K-pop girl group to chart on Canadian Hot 100.  BLACKPINK had definitely gained commercial success and immense popularity just within a few months into their debut, so much so that Billboard named them as one of the best new K-pop groups of 2016.

International recognition

BLACKPINK has always had a huge and loyal fandom since its debut. Even after almost 1 year-long hiatus, their fans, BLINKs, have always patiently waited for them. 2018 saw them embark on their journey to become one of the world’s biggest pop bands and earn a, even more, bigger fan following in the international market.

In June 2018 the group released its first EP title, Square Up, with the lead single Ddu-Du Ddu-Du. The song went became a viral hit instantly and was referred to as a song to all the haters who tried to pull down BLACKPINK by throwing malicious comments on them and telling them to disband.

Not only the song and the EP chart on multiple music charts across the globe, but the music video for Ddu-Du Ddu-Du also garnered 36.2 million views on YouTube, making it the most-viewed video in the first 24 hours by a Korean act and the second most-watched music video of all time in first 24 hours of release at the time.

The Album and The Show

In May 2018 YG announced that it would release a pre-single in June and the second one in August (How You Like That and Ice Cream respectively) in order to promote BLACKPINK’s first full album.

In October YG released their first album, The Album, with the lead single Lovesick Girls. Again, peaking at every music chart possible, BLACKPINK also became the first-ever K-pop girl group to sell over a million copies of an album.

Blackpink: Light Up the Sky, the group’s first documentary film, was released on Netflix on October 14, 2020, and covered the four years since the group’s inception in 2016. The documentary featured video from their early days in the band, as well as glances into their personal lives, behind-the-scenes stories, and interviews with the members, and peeks into the development of The Album. BLACKPINK topped Bloomberg’s Pop Star Power Ranking for the month of October, becoming the first Korean artist to do so since the ranking’s launch in April of that year, thanks to the financial success of The Album and the group’s Netflix documentary.

BLACKPINK held their first-ever online concert, The Show, in January 2021 selling over 280,000 members. The concert was streamed in 100 countries.

With BLACKINK’s Ice Cream music video hitting 700 million views on YouTube, this becomes their eighth music video to reach the milestone so far after Ddu-Du Ddu-Du, Boombayah, As If It’s Your Last, Kill This Love, HowYouLikeThat, Whistle, and Playing With Fire. Four of their music videos have also surpassed a billion views. Aside from their official music videos, the group’s dance performance video for How You Like That recently surpassed 1 billion views on YouTube, setting a new record.
