Amy Schumer and her husband Chris Fischer are separating ways after over seven years of marriage.

According to PEOPLE, the 44-year-old American stand-up comedian took to Instagram to break the news to her followers on Friday, December 12. Schumer posted a picture of herself and Fischer, 45, on the New York City subway, while captioning the post with:

“Blah blah blah Chris and I have made the difficult decision to end our marriage after 7 years. We love each other very much and will continue to focus on raising our son. We would appreciate people respecting our privacy at this time. blah blah blah not because I dropped some lbs and thought I could bag s basket and not because he’s a hot Janlmes beard award winning chef who can still pull some hot tail. Amicable and all love and respect! Family forever.”

Speaking to PEOPLE, a source close to the couple revealed, “There’s nothing ugly. It’s a cohesive split. They’ve just been finalizing a few things.”

Eliminating any thoughts to salvage the relationship, a source told Page Six, “They’ve been having issues for ages, and my understanding is all they are doing now is working out a conscious uncoupling plan.”

The insider further added, “There is zero chance of salvaging the marriage … but Amy also wants to have the most amicable co-parenting relationship possible with Chris, so they are sorting out what will work best.”

The pair reportedly tied the knot in February 2018, having been romantically linked for the first time in 2017. In May 2019, they welcomed their son Gene.

Although the announcement of their divorce seems sudden, the couple’s marital status had always been up for questioning, according to Page Six. According to the news outlet, in 2021, when their divorce rumors were ripe, Fischer had ostensibly joked about it when he presented Schumer with a 40th birthday cake that read, “I’m leaving you.”

The actress had shared a video of the incident via Instagram. Her face had turned serious when her former husband presented her with the cake, which was meant to be a sarcastic joke, while her family sang “Happy Birthday” on her birthday.

In 2023, the rumors that the couple was separating rose exponentially when they spent an entire summer apart. Schumer sojourned in Europe with Jerry Seinfeld and his wife, Jessica, without Fischer.

According to PEOPLE‘s source, the couple had been “privately working through normal issues that couples in long-term marriages” would. As cited on November 13, the source had added back then, “They are both committed to the relationship.”

As per the news outlet, a week before, Schumer took to her Instagram Stories to update her fans about her relationship status with her husband. Sharing a picture of New York City and praising Hulu’s divorce-lawyer series All’s Fair, the Trainwreck actress wrote, “And Chris and I are still married.”

In a now-deleted Instagram post shared on December 1, Schumer tried to put an end to all the speculations rising about her marriage, while also updating her followers on her recent health journey. She wrote in the caption, “Whatever ends up happening with me and Chris has nothing to do with weight loss or autism.”

She added, “Fingers crossed we make it through. He’s the best.”

According to PEOPLE, Schumer deleted all previous photos from her Instagram profile on November 11, which included those that featured Fischer. At the time, she shared a new post justifying her action by writing, “I actually left my house tonight. Who’s proud? I’m feeling good and happy. Deleted my old pics for no reason!”

The former couple was last spotted publicly in an industry event together in June, at a 2025 Tribeca Film Festival premiere of the documentary Room to Move.
